Beyond the White Picket Fence

I opened the door at 3 am last August. Two sleepy children came in, took a look around, plopped themselves on the couch and went back to sleep. The in-take caseworker came in behind them holding nothing but her cell phone. As the kids slept we talked about what had just transpired several hours earlier. These two siblings had been taken to the police station after being found sleeping alone on the ground behind a liquor store. 10 and 9 they had been left by their drunk bio-mother to fend for themselves. The DHS intake worker got the call and after we said yes to the placement brought them to the ranch. They had the clothes they were wearing and nothing else. Our "Send a Hug" backpack program was set up for this exact scenario. If child protection services had our pack backs each child would have received one with personal essentials, clothing vouchers, a blanket and toy. The backpacks serve all the Southern Colorado area. Please take the time to donate monthly. We have 40 backpacks to fill and each cost $25.00. We have a fill date by March 1 2020 to distribute these to the counties we serve. We are in need of $1000.00 to meet this quota.
