Beyond the white picket fence

Warriors of God/men of Courage

Written by Dale Nuss

Being a Dad to a Son

Psalms 78 verse 8

And that they should not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not steadfast, whose spirit was not faithful to God.

Statistics show that boys who grow up without a dad are more likely to be aggressive, have low self esteem, be incarcerated and use drugs. I’m not saying that the single Moms out there are failing, I believe they are doing a fantastic job, but without a father or father figure it makes your job much harder.

God wants dads to be the priest, prophet and king of their household; most importantly God wants us to be an example to our sons. Dads need to protect, love, encourage and develop relationships with their sons. When Dads do this an important bond is strengthened, which not only has an impact on families, but shows a significant impact on society. You might wonder why I am using the term “Dad” instead of Father. To me the word Father is more formal and requires less emotional investment. Being a Dad is a dedicated and lifelong duty a lot of men would call a privilege and joy.

I have five adopted sons ranging from three to thirteen. They come from broken homes some of the fathers are incarcerated, addicts or simply left. I know when they first came to our home, they were angry, had very low self esteem, scared and all of them had trust issues. I remember thinking how am I going to raise these boys to be strong healthy Godly men. So I started praying. I prayed for wisdom, I prayed for strength, I prayed that God would make me the Dad he wanted me to be. It seldom looks perfect and most of the time it looks like total chaos. When I look back I can see how they have changed. The confidence, not as afraid and the trust they have in me is showing up. They are all seeking God first.

Warriors of God, Men of Courage we need to stand up and be the dads God has called us to be. Let’s be steadfast and a generation who is faithful to God.

Let’s raise our sons to be strong confident Warriors of God.
